Local authorities say four people have died, and another was seriously injured, after storms battered the south of the country on Wednesday.

The Préfet of Bouches-du-Rhône said in a statement that three people had died, while a fourth was seriously injured in the storms that struck on Wednesday.

The authority added that there was "major damage" after storms brought high winds, exceptionally heavy rain and localised flooding to large parts of the south coast.

Météo France had placed the départements of Ardèche, Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Corse, Var, Vaucluse, Gard and Hérault on alert for storms and localised flooding.

On Tuesday, two women, aged 26 and 86, died in a flooded cellar in Lançon-Provence, in Bouches-du-Rhône. Their deaths came after a 75-year-old man died in nearby Istres on Tuesday after his car was swept away by floodwaters.

Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and the island of Corsica are facing a major clean-up operation as flash flooding swept through towns and villages.
